Mid-Century French Vallauris Hand-Painted Bird & Butterfly Art Pottery Bowl

Circa: 1950.

Vallauris is a historic ceramic town on the French Riviera, located between Cannes and Antibes on the Côte d’Azur. For centuries the region produced utilitarian pottery, but after World War II the town transformed into one of Europe’s most important centers for artistic ceramics.

That transformation was sparked in 1946 when Pablo Picasso began working in the pottery workshops of Madoura Pottery. Picasso lived in Vallauris for several years and created hundreds of ceramic works there. His presence drew international attention to the town and inspired dozens of artists and ceramicists to establish studios in Vallauris during the 1950s and 1960s.

As a result, Vallauris became a hub of mid-century studio pottery, where artists experimented with abstract forms, bold colors, and playful motifs such as birds, geometric shapes, and organic patterns. Many pieces were hand-painted and signed simply “Vallauris” or “Vallauris Côte d’Azur,” indicating their origin in the region’s artisan workshops rather than a single factory or manufacturer.

Today, mid-century Vallauris ceramics are once again highly sought after by collectors and interior designers. Their expressive decoration, handcrafted character, and connection to the artistic culture of the French Riviera make them ideal statement pieces for modern interiors. With the continued popularity of mid-century design and studio ceramics, Vallauris pottery has experienced a strong resurgence in both European and American design markets.
