Louis XIV Period Provençal Armoire in Walnut with Burl Marquetry, Circa 1680

Louis XIV Period Provençal Armoire in Walnut with Burl Marquetry, Circa 1680

SKU:CN2841025-105

Late 17th century Provençal armoire in solid walnut with extensive burl marquetry decoration to the doors and drawer fronts. The facade is centered with large inlaid medallions featuring a geometric star motif executed in contrasting woods and framed within molded walnut reserves typical of the Louis XIV period in the South of France.

The quality of the burl veneer and the scale of the marquetry indicate this was made for a well appointed household rather than for utilitarian rural use. The vertical central inlay and banded drawer fronts reinforce the symmetry and architectural presence characteristic of provincial interpretations of Louis XIV furniture.

Original forged iron hardware remains throughout. Interior shelving and drawers retain their early construction with visible hand worked surfaces and original joinery.

Sourced in the Var region of Provence from a private owner who had acquired it from a château estate where it remained as a family piece for generations. While undocumented, the materials, construction, patina, and decorative vocabulary are fully consistent with late 17th century Provençal craftsmanship.
