Wooden fragments
Circa: 1800.
A striking pair of 18th century Baroque altar prayer tablets, likely Italian, featuring hand-carved giltwood frames with scrolling acanthus ornament and cresting. These devotional plaques originally served as liturgical reference tablets used during the Catholic Mass.
Each frame contains original printed Latin prayers mounted within the carved cartouche form. The larger plaque displays sections of the Gloria and Credo, while the smaller tablet features the Lavabo prayer recited by the priest during the preparation of the altar.
The richly carved frames retain remnants of their original water gilding over gesso, now beautifully aged with time and patina. Pieces like these were typically displayed on church altars or used within private devotional spaces during the 18th century.
A rare and decorative example of ecclesiastical Baroque craftsmanship that works equally well as historical wall décor.
